Remote Learning Friday 5/22

Happy Fun Friday K-class. We  made it through another exciting week. Today I have a  math exploring game for you. I am curious to see how many different shapes you are going to be able to find around you house and yard. Have a Fun Friday and enjoy your  long weekend. Remember  Monday is Memorial Day. This is a day where I will be cooking out on the grill and eating at the picnic table in my yard, even if its just me and my family.

1. Word Work: Read, color, write! For this activity, tap out the word, color in the picture that matches what you read, and then write the word yourself using lower case letters!

2. Science:  It’s now been a couple days since our last journal entry… do you see any changes happening?? Be sure to record the date, draw a picture with labels, and write down what you see!

3. Math:  How many different shapes can you find in, or outside of your house? I found a rock in the shape of a heart, my shutter is shaped like a rectangle, my windows are square…..Draw a picture of the items and don’t forget to label the shape.

4. Social Studies/ Memorial Day: Please log into Epic for a variety of age appropriate books that teach kids all about this important holiday observed in America, also sometimes referred to as Decoration Day or Poppy Day.  I recommend the following titles on Epic: “Memorial Day” by RJ Bailey, “Lets Celebrate Memorial Day” (this title will read to your child), or “Celebrating holidays: Memorial Day” by Rachel Grack. Typically in the K classroom we discuss and learn about the following terms as well: memorial, veteran, military, poppy, remembrance, decorate, war, peace, parade, honor, pride, support, respect, volunteer, and donate. Other fantastic titles that we read in Kindergarten that you may be interested in picking up at the library or bookstore are: “The Poppy Lady” by Barbara Walsch  or Rolling Thunder by Kate Messner or Proud as a Peacock Brave as a Lion by Jane Barclay

5. Social Studies/ Memorial Day Poppy Craft for Kids: There are many ways that you can make your own poppy flowers with your children at home. You can cut out red flower shapes from construction paper and use black pipe cleaners as stems. Paper baking cups also make good flower crafting, you can even layer them for an increased 3D effect. Pass out these flowers in remembrance of loved ones and veterans to those in the community. Cut apart the sections of an egg carton and paint them red. Add a button in the middle. Paint a background on oaktag or a piece of cardboard and paint stems. Glue on the egg carton flowers at the tops of the painted stems and display your masterpiece! Crafts that encourage your child to use a tracer, cut on a line, fold, and glue all encourage fine motor skills, hand control, hand eye coordination (all which translate to improved handwriting!). Crafts that children can make to distribute with a purpose tied to their learning also provides them with an opportunity to participate in their community and the holidays our country celebrates.

6. SPECIALS:  Log onto one of the specialist teacher’s blog spaces (music, art, PE, or Library) and choose one to complete today. Every week new assignments are being posted at the K grade level!
