Please find below a few links to great reading resources. The first is a link to “Mighty Girls” website with recommended literature for a variety of age groups. The second is to a recently published article in “Marie Clair”, and the third is another great literature resource from “Oyate.”

Celebrating Families
A big Thank You to Susana’s mother Ana for visiting the K classroom to share their family tradition of Novenas. Susana and Ana shared with the class many of the ceramic figurines they use when constructing elaborate nativities with family and friends leading up to Christmas day. They shared with us a beautiful large color photo of one of the nativity scenes they created, and introduced us to a variety of instruments they use when celebrating through song and music when they visit Columbia for the holidays. Susana and Ana snag a song to the class in Spanish, and students then had a chance to each create their own maraca and we had fun making music and singing together!
Dorothy Cresswell, former Leverett Elementary Teacher, also visited our classroom this week! She taught the class how to sing and sign a new song from her CD, “It’s Love That Makes a Family.” She also shared with the class a Native American legend about a White Buffalo, resolving conflicts, and sharing with others. Thank you Dorothy for visiting our classroom!
Diversity
Diversity is a big and deep word. As kindergarten begins exploring this term, and its many related terms, we will begin by looking inward and thinking about what makes each of us awesome and celebrating who we are as individuals. We will also celebrate our families and the many ways our families are important/special to us. No two individuals, or families, or exactly alike! I have attached below a wonderful audio recording of Maya Angelou reciting her poem “Human Family.”

Book Character Day
Friday was an exciting and fun filled day! We started off our morning with reading buddies (it was hard to tell who was who!). Later in the day we sat around our classroom “campfire” and read “The Creepy Carrots” with Ms. Martha. It was a spooky story- but we were brave! We concluded our costume day with a Friday all school assembly. I hope everyone had a safe and fun-filled Halloween weekend!
